General information about Borkow
The name Borkow comes from the Old Slavic borŭ for fight or bor for spruce. The place name means therefore as much as place of the fight or spruce forest.
Typical for Slav settlements is the "ow" in the place name (church foundation and colonization ran parallel).
Thus, the founding of the place Borkow lies well before the year 1283 as it was erroneously mentioned in the Borkow Festschrift of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary (in 1983).
Especially since the Knight of Maltza (h) n has been overwritten in 1248 Borkow, Below and Dennis (Kossaten villages) as property.
The tower hill which is located on our property was not until the middle of the 15th Century created. He served as a protection against attackers and wild animals. The tower hill is a listed building. From our property you can reach the "tower hill island" via a small bridge.
General information about the manor house Borkow
We bought the farmhouse, which was in need of renovation in 1996, and started the renovation work immediately.
In 1997 we opened our farmhouse for our guests for the first time.
The historical development of Borkow is closely linked to our manor house.
Unlike most of the farmhouses in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, there was not a traditional family that owned the Borkow manor house for several centuries. The manor had many and very different owners.
There is a legend about the old - in the Kamlade located - manor house.
This much smaller farmhouse is said to have sunk in the small lake behind the teacher's home (house of red bricks next to the small church). The legend also says that the house can still be seen in good weather today. As with all legends, this can not be proved exactly. But often there is a small spark of truth.
The present manor house was built in its origins probably around the year 1608 - thus still before the 30-year-old war.
The manor of Borkow was created at that time in horseshoe style.
The manor house stood in the middle and on both sides were the stables. You have to imagine it as a small village. Among other things, there was a nursery with a greenhouse. This greenhouse was only mined after the 2nd World War by a gardener from Dabel.
There was also a joinery in the estate. This existed when we bought the property in 1996. Before the dilapidated carpentry was demolished, the remaining machines were brought to Kobrow in the local museum village. There they can still be admired today. A pile of stones with small remains of carpentry still serves as a silent witness.
The estate was surrounded by a wall. Individual parts were still visible until the beginning of the 21st century.
As part of a road construction project in 2001, the remains of the original wall were unfortunately destroyed. Thus, nothing is left of the ancient wall. The old Kastanienallee was removed to our regret from the monument protection program and much later also the road construction measures to the victim.
In general, it can be said that Gut Borkow has been a source of income for centuries. This certainly allowed the owners to live properly for their own time.
Old finds from this period confirm this upscale lifestyle. The family Reichhoff (for more information see year period 1850 - 1928) was in possession of dishes of the company Copeland & Spode which was imported from England. Also parts of branded porcelain from Silesia could be found.
In addition, there was an Art Nouveau tiled stove from this time. This was well hidden and had all the trials and tribulations of the 20. Century (including the two world wars and dismantling by the Russians) very well survived. We discovered this during the renovation.
