Positive: The rooms were large, apart from the bathroom. The location was great, we could get immediately into the city centre and around the Promenade to Aasee. Hammerstrasse is lovely with lots of places to eat and get ice cream. It was only ten minutes' walk to the train station.

Negative: Communication with the property owners was challenging. I received one, very long, message when I booked (months ago) and it was all in German. Hidden within it was information about getting the code. I tried communicating with the property owner closer to the time and was directed so someone else, who did not reply. I tried contacting them again through booking.com but got no response. However on the day when I called they did give me the code to get the key. I was glad I spoke and could read German. Trying to get into the apartment was also a nightmare. The key isn't a key, it's some sort of electric gadget that you hold to the door in a specific way. There were no instructions on how to use the key and it took us a whole day and another (unhelpful) phone call to the owner (again in German), to understand how to use the key. You have to hold it to the door until the light is green, then remove it and wait for the light to go double green. Then you can turn the handle. Most of the time it will flash red at you and you have to start again. We did worry we'd be locked out. The bathroom was very small. My husband and I are 165 and 175 cm. Our knees were touching the wall as we sat on the toilet! Tall people should avoid this place! The flush casing also fell off on the second day. The balcony was really big but hadn't been cleaned. There was a lot of pigeon poop, particularly on the furniture to be used on the balcony. It was a shame because we'd have liked to sit out there. There was a sink and a washing up bowl. However the washing up bowl did not fit in the sink so we had to wash up by putting the bowl on the hob! No washing up liquid was provided. There were no instructions on recycling. The Germans have a complicated recycling system with food waste, cardboard, plastic, green point, tins etc all separated. We couldn't follow this system because we didn't know where to put it all and only one bin was provided.

Summary: Frustrating.
